Basic Chemical Industries (BCI Group) had started out to establish itself as a chemical manufacturing company in 1967, when there were no other companies of its kind in Saudi Arabia or the gulf region. However, after facing many hurdles, it was in 1973 that the company actually started operating its first plant in Dammam. The company is now regarded as one of the leaders in the production of Chlorine, Caustic Soda, Hydrochloric Acid and Sodium Hypochlorite in the Gulf region. Today, BCI is known to deliver high quality chemical products, not only to domestic market, but also international clients. Based in Dammam, BCI has managed to make a mark in the Chemicals sector of Saudi Arabia. In 2008, the company decided to become public, thereby making itself a publicly listed company in the Saudi Stock Exchange. BCI operates a number of subsidiaries like Basic Chemical Industries Co. (BCI), Chemical Marketing and Distribution Company (CMDC), Basic Chemical National Company (BCNC), Huntsman APC Limited (HAPC), National Adhesives Limited (NAL) and Saudi Water Treatment Company (SWTC). The company has offices in Dammam, Jeddah, Riyadh and Dubai as well. BCI also offers decontamination services to its clients using Zyme-Flow Decon Technology. In addition to producing chemicals, BCI Group also provides advice and technical services in the Chemical sector. The company's subsidiary, SWTC, locally manufactures many of the products needed in the water treatment processes. BCI is not only committed to using state-of-the-art technology in its operations, but also ensures compliance with the quality standards set by the group. In 2021, the company signed a non-binding letter of intent to acquire a 49% stake in Union Chlorine LLC. In May 2023, BCI also signed a memorandum of understanding with Italmatch to supply chlorine, caustic soda, and hydrochloric acid to Italmatch factories in the Plaschem complex in Jubail Industrial City.
