The National Bank of Bahrain Group (NBB Group), comprising the National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) and Bahrain Islamic Bank (BisB), has announced the successful execution of Bahrain's first sustainable collateralised Murabaha, valued at over $50 million. The funds raised through the arrangement will be allocated against the Group's ESG Asset Portfolio, further strengthening its mandate
Marking a significant milestone for the Kingdom's Islamic finance sector, the landmark transaction demonstrates how the Group's conventional and Sharia-compliant banking capabilities can be applied within a single financing structure.
NBB contributed its market expertise and liquidity management capabilities to the structuring and execution of the facility, supporting an efficient collateralised solution at institutional scale. Meanwhile, BisB applied its Islamic treasury expertise and Sustainable Finance Framework, which is aligned with international standards including ICMA and LMA principles.
The funds raised through the arrangement will be allocated against the Group's ESG Asset Portfolio, further strengthening its mandate towards sustainable finance, responsible banking, and the continued development of solutions that support long-term value creation.
On the key achievement, Husain Almohri, Group Chief Executive - Markets & Client Solutions at NBB, said: "Efficient liquidity deployment depends on structures that are commercially sound, operationally precise, and responsive to market requirements. This transaction meets those requirements while extending the range of Sharia-compliant solutions available through the Group and establishing a repeatable foundation for more sophisticated market activity."
Zaina Al Zayani, Group Chief Strategy & Sustainability Officer at NBB, said: "Sustainable finance delivers its greatest impact when it shapes capital allocation and drives the design of innovative financial solutions. This initiative translates the Group's strategic priorities into tangible outcomes achieved from the complementary strengths of NBB and BisB to support responsible growth."
By executing this pioneering facility, NBB Group continues to expand the scope of Islamic banking solutions while contributing to national efforts aimed at embedding sustainability across the financial services industry
